  • Rolling scars: broad depressions with sloping edges
  • Boxcar scars: broad depressions with sharply defined edges
Raised Hypertrophic or keloid
  • Thick raised scars resulting from acne as well as other forms of trauma such as burns or surgical scar
Pigmented
  • Residual pigment or discolouration that remains on the skin after acne lesions heal.

Your Options

    1. HALO
Laser resurfacing is a proven method of improving skin texture including atrophic, raised hypertrophic and keloid scars. While there are a variety of different types of lasers available, Ancaster Dermatology is excited to provide some of the most advanced technology available for skin resurfacing today. HALO is a hybrid fractional laser (HFL), combining two types of laser wavelengths to provide a safer and less aggressive alternative than that of previous technology. Halo provides patients with shorter downtime, fewer side effects and improved results. We believe this new laser modality is truly an advancement in treatment.
    2. Subcision
Intended especially for depressed atrophic acne or chicken pox scars, subcision is a minor surgical procedure that is performed under local anesthetic. Using only a needle, the technique detaches and breaks down scar tissue beneath the depression while stimulating new collagen. Subcision is well tolerated by patients and requires no down-time. Benefits are noted within one month of treatment; monthly sessions are typically required. This treatment has no risk with the exception of the potential for minor bruising. Subcision is also used in addition to other therapies such as HALO laser treatments.
    3. IPL or Photodynamic Therapy
Both IPL intense pulsed light (IPL) and Photodynamic Therapy are light-based procedures that can improve the quality of skin by encouraging collagen development and fading discolourations. IPL can also be used with a topical light sensitizing cream known as photodynamic therapy.  We can customise your light-based treatment based on the age and severity of your scars. Expect monthly treatments of 4-5 sessions.
    4. Steroid Injections for Scarring
Intralesional steroid injections can be effective in treating hypertrophic and keloid scars. There is emerging evidence that HALO combined with intralesional steroid may be also beneficial.
    5. Chemical Peels
Chemical peels work by penetrating the outermost layers of skin with powerful agents called hydroxy acids. These acids exfoliate the skin and accelerate skin repair, ultimately revealing new, healthy skin. The chemical peels offered by Ancaster Dermatology are available in various formulations  that have been carefully chosen for their effectiveness. This therapy is of benefit for superficial scarring only, particularly helpful for textural post acne changes on shoulders and back.
