Even if the majority of your sun exposure occurred years ago, your skin will still reveal the signs of exposure as you age. Red blotches, brown spots, fine wrinkles, and laxity are all signs of sun damage. Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, performed at Ancaster Dermatology Centre, can help people who wish to reduce these and other mild or moderate skin concerns. The knowledgeable medical professionals at Ancaster Dermatology can guide you through the process of revealing healthy looking skin with IPL.

We are here to help. Call Ancaster Dermatology Centre at (905) 304-1122 to schedule your visit.

Is IPL Right for Your Skin?

IPL is a safe, effective and versatile treatment. It is best at reducing the appearance of the following concerns:

  1. Brown spots or freckles
  2. Redness and blotchy skin
  3. Broken capillaries
  4. Enlarged pores
IPL can be easily performed on the face, chest, neck, and hands – body parts that typically see the most sun exposure. During your initial consultation, you and Dr. Wismer review your primary complaints and choose the best treatment plan to address your individual concerns. IPL works by sending powerful waves of light energy through the outermost layers of the skin. These waves penetrate to the source of pigmentation irregularities and other concerns without damaging the surface of the skin. The light targets darker skin pigment, causing it to break down and disperse, effectively clearing up the complexion.

The IPL Experience

IPL is a straightforward, non-invasive procedure that we perform here in our dermatology clinic. Our experienced laser technician begins by cleansing your skin and applying a cool, conductive gel to keep the temperature regulated and consistent throughout the procedure. The technician applies the handheld IPL applicator to your skin and moves it across the treatment area as it delivers pulses of light energy. IPL is not painful, although you may experience a sensation of warmth, tingling, or stinging during the treatment. You can return to your regular daily activities as soon as your appointment is over. You may experience some lingering effects of the treatment, such as mild redness or blotchiness. In the days following your session, you may notice your treated brown or red spots begin to darken. This is normal and a good indicator that the treatment was successful. Over time they will fade and disappear. At Ancaster Dermatology Centre, we recommend a series of 3 to 5 sessions performed every 3 weeks or so. The number of treatments that we suggest for you depends on the condition you would like to treat. Keep in mind that you'll need to be diligent about wearing sun protection in between your treatments as well as post treatment to maintain your IPL results and healthy skin.
