Dermal Fillers

waves

Injectable dermal fillers are understandably popular because they provide a non-surgical solution for common aesthetic concerns and show off positive results within days of treatment. This versatile group of products can help restore a more youthful appearance by smoothing lines and adding a lift to areas that have sagged or lost volume. Although there are a variety of dermal fillers, at Ancaster Dermatology Centre in Hamilton we are extremely pleased with the results we see with Juvederm® and we’re confident you will too.

Would you like to learn more about improving your skin with injectable dermal fillers? Please call Ancaster Dermatology Centre at (905) 304-1122 to schedule your visit.

Are Dermal Fillers Right for Your Skin?

The art and science of injectables have evolved significantly and so too the understanding of how to create a beautiful, rested, refreshed complexion. It is normal to experience age related loss of facial volume and dermal fillers are designed to safely counter the forces of time and gravity. Even small amounts can create a profound impact. Our goal is to help create a more youthful version of you. We promote aesthetic, natural looking  tasteful results.

Dermal Filler and Covid-19 Vaccinations

In the Moderna trial (one of the two m-RNA vaccines we now have available in Canada as of February 2021) there were three cases out of 15,000 patients injected that reported facial swelling after vaccine injections. These occurred in patients who had previously had cosmetic dermal filler. These episodes were short lived and settled with antihistamines. Other case reports have been cropping up in the lay press and we expect that while rare, there will be more. It appears that most cases will be seen in patients with recent injections, but even remote filler may present this way. These reactions are temporary and we do not expect them to be common. They have been managed with antihistamines and in some cases, a few days of oral prednisone. We consider vaccinations to be an important step towards bringing this pandemic under control and giving us our lives back again. We encourage you to be vaccinated despite these reports. Please keep us aware of anything of this nature that does occur with your vaccinations and we will assist you in management. Here is a quick summary from the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology:

Vaccinations in persons with a history of dermal filer use:

Infrequently persons who have received dermal fillers may develop swelling at or near the site of filler injections (usually face or lips) following administration of a dose of mRNA Covid-19 vaccine. This appears to be temporary and can resolve with medical treatment including corticosteroid therapy. mRNA Covid-19 vaccines may be administered to persons who have received injectable dermal fillers and who have no contraindications. No additional precautions are needed. However, these persons should be advised to contact their healthcare provider if they develop swelling at or near the site of dermal filler following vaccination.

Juvéderm®

Ancaster Dermatology is excited to offer Juvéderm's® latest product,Volite.

Volite is a new innovative injectable designed to improve the overall quality and radiance of your skin.It hydrates your skin leaving you with a beautiful glow. Your skin will feel and look smoother, less dry, plumper and firmer. Eliminating crepiness, fine lines, imperfections and acne scars. Volite can be used on your face, neck lines, hands and décolletage.

How Dermal Fillers Work

Because dermal fillers such as Juvéderm® are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar in the body, the treatment is well tolerated. During your initial consultation, you will discuss your medical history and goals for treatment to ensure that injectable dermal fillers are right for you. In some cases, we may recommend an alternative, such as Botox Cosmetic® or HALO LASER to give you the smoother, younger-looking skin you desire.

Is a Soft Lift® for You?

The older methods of injecting into lines has been replaced by the artistry and science of the Soft Lift®, combining both Botox Cosmetic® and Juvéderm® dermal fillers to smooth deep wrinkles and fine lines, restore volume and enhance facial contours at the same time.

The Dermal Filler Experience at Ancaster Dermatology

The initial consultation is the first step where we take a careful history, examine your facial features and listen to your treatment goals. After you fill out a questionnaire detailing your medical history, medications and allergies we explain the products that we plan to use, the type and amount of product required and thoroughly discuss all risks and benefits. Prior to your treatment, we advise you to discontinue use of aspirin and certain other medications or supplements with anti-inflammatory properties, as these can encourage excessive bleeding or bruising during and after your treatment. We also advise that you avoid dental care for one month prior and one month following treatment. Your face will be gently cleansed and all makeup removed. Chlorhexidene will be used to disinfect the skin.  Most patients will be offered a topical anesthetic for 30 minutes prior to procedure.  The fillers come pre-mixed with local anesthetic (lidocaine) so the treatment is very comfortable. The entire procedure takes from 30-60 minutes in total. We recommend that you do not apply makeup and avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours following procedure. After your visit, there is no medical reason to avoid any of your normal daily activities. It is normal to experience minor redness, swelling, and rarely bruising at the injection sites, but these are temporary and should last no more than a few days. The results of your dermal filler injections can be immediately appreciated, and you can expect them to last up to two years.
